This is the prophetic psalm which Jesus used to challenge the Pharisees. He said, He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
Matthew 22:42-44
But today, am thinking about the phrase "the order of Melchisedek."
Certain folks have gone overboard with trying to figure out who this guy was. The first thing some of them do is talk about this mysterious "order" to which he belonged to. This is a classic case of someone creating a theology based on not knowing olde english. "on the order" simply means "just like." You're a priest just like Melchisedek. There is no "order" -- although the Mormon missionary would say otherwise.
So how was Jesus like Melchisedek? Melchisedek had neither father nor mother, Paul says. Melchisedek took bread and wine from Abram as a priest of God. Melchisedek was king of Salem (King of Jerusalem.) He was a priest/warrior/king. Now, whether he was a pre-incarnation appearance of Jesus or an angel as some say, (supposedly angels taught people how to worship God before the law was given.) who knows? Paul considered all this two deep for those of us with milk. All we need to know is that The Lord will make the Lord's enemies his footstool.
Psalm 110
1The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
2The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.
3Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.
4The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
5The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.
6He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.
7He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.
